Fairbanks Symphony Concerto Competition: Results Announced

The 20th annual Concerto Competition was held on Jan 29-30  at Davis Concert Hall. The competition adjudicators were Mark Goodenberger and Denise Dillenbeck of Ellensburg, WA. There were a total of 31 competing musicians over 4 age categories. The winners of each category, listed below, will appear as featured soloists with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, May 1, 2011.

Category A  (11 years old and younger) 
Ari Endestad, age 10, of Fairbanks is homeschooled  in the Raven Correspondence School program and studies violin with Dr. Gail Johansen. He is a member of the Fairbanks Youth Concert Orchestra.  He performed the Violin Concerto No. 4  in D major by Friedrich Seitz.

Category B  (12-15 years old)
Laila Brubaker
, age 13, of Fairbanks is an eighth grade student at Barnett Magnet School and studies violin with Dr. Gail Johansen. She performed Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in  D minor.

Category C  (16-18 years old) 
Kendra Frey
, age 16, of Fairbanks is a junior at Lathrop High School and studies violin with Dr. Kathleen Butler-Hopkins. Kendra is the Concertmaster of the Fairbanks Youth Symphony and also performs with the Fairbanks Symphony and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra. She performed the Violin Concerto in D minor by Aram Khachaturian.

Category D  (Full Time UAF Student)
Franz Felkl
, age 19, from Juneau, AK, is currently a sophomore music major at UAF and studies violin with Dr. Kathleen Butler-Hopkins. Franz performs with the Fairbanks Symphony and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra. He performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major.

The 20th annual Fairbanks Symphony Concerto Competition was sponsored by a generous grant from Great Northwest, Inc. Hotel accommodation for our two adjudicators was generously provided by the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel

Zuill Bailey
Thursday, September 16, 2010, 7:30 p.m.
Cellist Zuill Bailey , who thrilled our audience last February when he performed the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Fairbanks Symphony, performs all six unaccompanied Suites for Cello by J.S. Bach. This special recital is a benefit performance for both the Fairbanks Symphony and the Sitka Summer Music Festival. Mr. Bailey is also the Music Director designate for the Sitka Music Festival. Mr. Bailey has recorded the complete Bach cello suites on the TELARC label. The recording has been at the top of the Classical Billboard charts. A limited number of CD’s will be available for purchase at the performance.

Arctic Chamber Orchestra with Olivier Fluchaire
Sunday, October 3, 2010, 4 p.m.
Music Director Eduard Zilberkant leads the ACO in works by Mendelssohn, Respighi and Debussy. Guest soloist Olivier Fluchaire performs Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. Also included on the program are Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Respighi’s Gli Uccelli (The Birds) and Debussy’s Petite Suite arranged for orchestra by Henri Busser. A free pre-concert lecture will be delivered on stage by Maestro Zilberkant at 3:00 p.m.

Music Director Eduard Zilberkant leads the FSO in an all Tchaikovsky concert. Guest soloist Jura Margulis performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23. Also included on the program are the composer’s Polonaise from his opera Eugene Onegin and the Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”. A free pre-concert lecture will be delivered on stage by Maestro Zilberkant at 3:00 p.m.
